Evidence
An investigation team will gather together the history of a location, the stories of experiences and bring their equipment to try to gather and debunk each experience using scientific equipment to try to prove or disprove any spiritual activity. The disproving part comes in because if some experiences can be proven to be something of a mundane rather than a spiritual nature, then it cannot be used as proof of spiritual activity. Many times, this helps a home owner or a business to know they need some electrical work (by use of an EMF detector) and sometimes even plumbing work to be done in a location. Knowing this mundane work needs to be done can help to alleviate any feelings of fright a person may have while in a dwelling - it helps them to feel like they are not crazy and are not haunted.
Gathering evidence during an investigation can be a bit frustrating at times. Cameras (both digital and IR video cameras) are used as well as digital voice recorders. Using the digital voice recorders can be a bit tiring for an investigator because they feel like they may be talking to "no one" until the evidence is reviewed - that is when the gems of evidence can come into play. You need to take into account the experiences a person has had in different areas and first try to debunk what was seen or heard. For instance, if there are strange lights seen, you have to see if this was due to vehicle headlights or other mundane happenings to have caused the strange lights or shadows. An investigator also has to check doors to see if they can happen to swing open of their own accord due to bad latches, squeaky hinges, etc. An investigator also has to keep in mind the weather conditions as well - cold can cause a mist-like appearance in images due to breath. A person smoking in an area can also create a mist-like or ectoplasm-type appearance on film or digital images. Warm, rainy/snowy or humid times can show a lot of orbs in photos as can bugs.
Knowing all this comes into play before an investigation team will choose something as compelling evidence, here is where you can find some of those "gems" of scientific evidence we have encountered during different investigations. The following photos have some interesting properties that we have not been able to completely debunk or identify as something other than interesting. The following tow pictures were taken ouside while investigating an old one-room schoolhouse which has been converted to a private residence in Comstock, MI. It was too cold out for any bugs to be present and the air was dry of any sort of moisture. Interesting to note - EVPs were recorded during the time these photos were taken as well as the sound of footsteps when there was no one present (the shot of just a bright orb in the corner).
The following photo was taken in an old rootcellar down the street a bit from the schoolhouse. Two investigators were present for this photo and several photos were taken towards the doorway of the rootcellar before and after this photo - nothing shows up in any of the other photos. However, this one not only has an orb (which very well could be dust) but also has a mist-like line on an angle heading out the doorway that actually casts a shadow.
